Citizen Input and Public Policy
Many public officials and organizations are interested in finding
out what public thinks about proposed policies but are frustrated
by their inability to get thoughtful input. Government conducted
public hearings are often poorly attended or become rancorous
"NIMBY" events.
The Council for Public Deliberation (CPD) believes that deliberative
public forums provide a more productive form of citizen involvement
in public policy. These moderated discussions follow specially
prepared issue guides that are grounded in existing thinking about
the particular issue but are designed to get beyond the adversarial
way many public issues are discussed by the public.
CPD specializes in:
- (1) partnering with community organizations to conduct deliberative
public forums in the Central Ohio area;
- (2) assisting community organizations in the design and implementation
of public involvement processes; and
- (3) providing training in forum facilitation and framing issues.
